The Future of Instructional Design for K-12

The Future of Instructional Design for K-12 Module 1

According to Dr Simonson distance learning has reached the critical mass, which indicates that distance learning is widely excepted as an effective tool for learning.  I agree with him that that distance learning is excepted and expected as an effective instructional learning design.  The AECT Conference and the U,   It is the content and the approach of instruction that facilitates successful teaching and learning.  The technology is the vehicle to design problem based learning and real world situations so learners can experience the content.  Technologies have evolved to today with Web 2.0 tools allows the matching of learning styles to the learner.  The technologies is also allowing us to access information in randomly.  The technology can be used to link the learning styles and the theories of learning.  Dr. Simonson further states that utilizing the technology put into schools effectively has been hindered by a lack of trained people who know how to use the technology.

Dr. Simonson on Instructional Technology

Dr Simonson further states in the video presentation, Distance Education: The Next Generation, that the distance learning now has to be nurtured and devolved.  According to Huett, et al, in an articlein TechTrends an organizational change is needed to develop effective distance learning (2008. p. 66).  Schools will need Instructional designers and teachers collaborating together to build instructions based upon what we already know about how students learn and construct knowledge through a collaborative global environment.  The technology is available to address the individual learning needs based upon scientific information for continued advancement in learning.  We have not yet made e-learning available for all students in the k-12 environment.  We still have so much to do to change the learning environment for k-12.  I have found this to true in that I have been trying to build individualized learning for students but had trouble doing so because of a lack of free software available.  The software I have found is more or less Learning Management Systems, but they do not lend to true individualized instruction.

  1. I agree that with Web 2.0 tools educators have more options for differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Huett et al. also discuss the importance of quality training and development by stating that everyone who is involved with e-learning will be affected.

    1. Time is the commodity that is lacking for all of the requirements of the day in the life of an educator. I have been trying to differentiate and individualize lessons, but we are still in the factory model schools system. It is difficult to orchestrate individualized lessons in this model. Alvin Toffler says, that we don't need a reform of the system. We need a complete new system(2008). The technology is available but the shortage is the software and training to develop the 21st century teaching and learning is lagging behind. The technology is there but the trained instructional designers are in short supply.

  2. You made some interesting comments in your blog. I agree that distance learning is becoming more widely used and accepted as a tool for learning primarily because of available technology. As you stated in your blog, the use of this ever-improving technology is bringing together different learning styles and the theories of learning. However, as you stated there is still a great deal of work to be done on the K-12 level regarding e-learning.

    1. The work to be done is in the area of instructional design focused on distance learning. I am thinking of the K-classroom and the enormousness task of designing the face to face classroom as a blended learning environment. I have been using Edmodo to individualize instruction. Students are still not able to move forward in the curriculum as self motivated learners. Not only do the teachers need to be trained to develop distance learning the learner also has to be trained to do so. Denis states this is a new way to learn and some learners may need training sessions in order to learn how to learn (2003)

  3. D Springsteen: You make an extremely important point when you mention the fact that there is technology available that can match learning styles and the best theories of learning for those learning styles, and the fact that we won't use the technology available in schools effectively has been hindered by a lack of trained people who know how to use the technology. So the next step for our schools is to train people! Thanks for making that important connection for people. -Devonee Trivett
